Can You Really Coach Yourself? Let’s Dive In
Ever tried to coach yourself and wondered if it’s enough? Self-coaching can often feel like a good idea, and it often IS — but it’s not always a smooth ride. How do you know when to rely on yourself and when to call in the experts? Let’s explore this together.
1. Start with Self-Coaching: Your First Step
We all start by trying to tackle our challenges solo. It’s like hitting the gym without a personal trainer. As Sheri puts it, “Self-coaching is us gaining awareness and working on the thing a little bit ourselves.” It’s a great start, but sometimes, we hit walls.
Application Tip: Jot down your thoughts and struggles in a journal every day. It’s a simple way to notice patterns and figure out where you might need a bit of extra help.
2. Know When You’re Stuck: Time to Seek Help
Self-coaching is awesome, but it has its limits. Daniel shares, “When I have a particularly difficult barrier, troubleshooting myself is tough.” We’ve all got our blind spots. That’s where an outside perspective can really open things up. Books, videos, or a chatting with someone else can offer new ways to see your situation.
Application Tip: If you’re feeling stuck, reach out to a mentor or join a community like CMC to get fresh eyes on your challenges. Or hire the best coach that you can afford!
3. Bring in New Perspectives: The Power of Coaching and Community
Having a coach or being part of a coaching community can offer insights you just can’t get alone. Sheri says, “I have three coaches right now… and I’ve been dramatically changed through books.” Whether it’s a one-on-one session or a group meetup, outside input can lead to big breakthroughs.
Application Tip: Think about hiring a coach in an area where you’re feeling blocked, or even read their book, or join group sessions to tap into shared wisdom.
4. Keep Growing: Mix Self-Coaching with Outside Help
As coaches, we’re always learning. It’s about blending self-coaching with getting help from others. Sheri reminds us, “As a coach, I always need to be self-coaching.” It’s all about growing, being open, and knowing when to lean on others.
Application Tip: Check in with yourself regularly to see where you might need extra input. This keeps you moving forward in your coaching journey.
